Professor Dr. Peter Jurczek
|
With great dismay and deep sorrow we register that Prof. Dr. Peter Jurczek passed away last week after long illness. Prof. Jurczek, Chair Professor of Geography at Technical University Chemnitz, in the last five years has been one of the most important German experts for our projects on sustainable developmetn in the inner-Korean border area. Since 2005 with dedication and often several visits per year in Korea he helped to develop concepts for spatial development in the border region linking preservation of the unique nature in the region and economic development for its population. The deceased played the leading role in designing the Korean „romantic road“ alongside the East Sea from Goseong to Samcheok, which finally has been implemented last year. For many years Prof. Jurczek worked at Bayreuth University in Upper Franconia, the region adjacent in the West to the former inner-German border area, and later, as a professor, he decisively lead the renewal of geography at Technical University Chemnitz in Saxony, at the Eastern side of the former inner-German border. Through this he intimately knew the challenges of the project in Korea. Also his work as a tourism expert and his long-standing commitment to German-Czech exchanges in the border region held many valuable lessons for our Korean partners.
We look back at his contributions with great fondness and we will not forget him.
