“Education about reunification as a part of school lessons” – Hanns-Seidel-Foundation sponsors successful training for 600 schoolmasters in the North-Gyeongsan province.
Presentation of Song Young-Dae, former State Secretary
of the Ministry for Reunification

Education about reunification is an essential part of school education. Especially when looking at surveys that state that a huge number of students knows practically nothing about the Korean War and its consequences, it is important to stress these topics on the school’s curricula. That is why the Hanns-Seidel-Foundation sponsored a great educational training this year for the first time. It was organised by the Agency for Education of the North-Gyongsang province and the Institute for Peace Affairs, that are project partners of the Hanns-Seidel-Foundation in the area of education about reunification, and also supported by the Ministry for Reunification.

About 600 schoolmasters participated in this extremely successful event. Lee Young-Woo, director of the Agency of Education of the North-Gyongsang province, stressed the importance for education about reunification in his greeting and particularly discussed the role of schools and teachers. The statement of the Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung emphasised that to convey democratic values is an important task of political education that is especially important for education about reunification. Song Young-Dae, former State Secretary of the Ministry for Reunification, and Hong Jae-Hyung, Director of the Educational Centre of the Ministry for Reunification, spoke about current North Korea policies and the guidelines of education about reunification at schools in preparation for the unification. Due to the huge success of the event a similar event will be carried out in other provinces.
