Dr. Lee Jongwon, President of KTRA, during his opening speech
The Korea Trade Research Association (KTRA) organized a big international conference “Towards a New Regionalism in Northeast Asia – For a Deeper Regional Integration” at COEX in Seoul on December 8, 2008. Hanns-Seidel-Foundation Korea was one of the co-sponsors at this conference.

Dr. Lee Jongwon, President of KTRA and scholar at University of Suwon , emphasized the importance of this timely conference on regional integration in times of worldwide financial crisis where regional economic cooperation is strongly needed to overcome it.

The morning session was divided into three different panels, which were all attended by many participants. Dr. Bernhard Seliger, representative of HSS Korea, was presenter in a panel on cooperation and FTAs in Northeast Asia. He was talking about North Korea’s external trade, the Gaesong Industrial Complex and the EU-Korea Free Trade Agreement. The other two panels were on International Business in Northeast Asia and E-Trade and Trade Fairs.

Two plenary sessions were held in the afternoon. Three presenters from China, Japan and Korea talked about new regionalism in Northeast Asia. Prof. Dr. Werner Pascha, University of Duisburg-Essen, who was invited by HSS Korea, shed light on the role of peer review in East Asian regional integration schemes.

The conference was not only attended by many distinguished Korean international scholars but also by a lot of students.
